A Delta flight headed to Madrid was turned around Thursday night and returned to John F. Kennedy International Airport after federal air marshals found a device with what appeared to be clipped pieces of wire protruding from it in the plane's bathroom.
A law-enforcement official said one of four air marshals on the flight discovered what "appeared to be a device that had wires sticking out of a cylindrical object" in one of the aircraft's bathrooms. The official said the device was determined to be harmless but nevertheless raised concerns among law enforcement that it could be a terrorism test run.
Delta Flight 126, which had departed at 8:10 p.m., returned to JFK around 9:33 pm., and officials removed the 217 passengers on board as NYPD Bomb Squad members scanned the plane.
